National Parks That Require Reservations: Timed Entry Rules for 2026

Reservation rules at national parks changed sharply in 2026. This guide lists which parks required timed entry or vehicle reservations, for which dates and hours, what each costs, how to book and what to do if you miss out.

As of November 2026, the national parks that required a timed-entry or vehicle reservation in 2026 were Rocky Mountain (May 22 to mid-October), Acadia for Cadillac Summit Road (May 20 to October 25), Haleakalā for sunrise (all year) and Carlsbad Caverns for entering the cave (all year). Arches, Yosemite, Glacier and Mount Rainier did not require vehicle reservations in 2026.

Reservations are made on Recreation.gov and usually cost $1 to $6 on top of the entrance fee. Several other parks require permits for specific trails, such as Angels Landing in Zion, and Great Smoky Mountains requires a paid parking tag. Rules for 2027 had not been announced for most parks as of November 2026.

Which national parks required reservations in 2026?

The table summarizes 2026 entry reservations at national parks, based on each park’s official pages.

Park What needed a reservation 2026 dates and hours Reservation cost
Rocky Mountain (CO) Timed entry: Bear Lake Road corridor permit, or rest-of-park permit Corridor: May 22–Oct 19, 5 a.m.–6 p.m. Rest of park: May 22–Oct 13, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. $2
Acadia (ME) Vehicles driving Cadillac Summit Road May 20–Oct 25, sunrise and daytime slots $6 per vehicle
Haleakalā (HI) Vehicles entering for sunrise All year, 3 a.m.–7 a.m. $1
Carlsbad Caverns (NM) Timed entry to enter the cavern All year $1 plus $15 entrance per person 16 and older
Zion (UT) Angels Landing hiking permit (trail only) All year, by seasonal and day-before lottery $6 application, $3 per person
Great Smoky Mountains (TN, NC) Parking tag, not a reservation All year, any vehicle parked over 15 minutes $5 day, $15 week, $40 year

Some park tours also need advance tickets, such as cave tours at Mammoth Cave and Wind Cave and ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours at Mesa Verde. These are activity reservations, not park entry.

Which parks dropped reservations in 2026?

Four well-known parks ran 2026 without vehicle reservations:

  • Arches (UT): announced in February 2026 that it would not use timed entry, which it had required since 2022. The park still warned of long entrance lines on busy days.
  • Yosemite (CA): announced in February 2026 that it would not use its peak-hours reservation system, relying instead on real-time traffic management and parking control in Yosemite Valley.
  • Glacier (MT): required no vehicle reservations in 2026 but piloted a three-hour parking limit at Logan Pass and a ticketed shuttle to Logan Pass. See our Glacier National Park guide for details.
  • Mount Rainier (WA): did not run timed entry for any part of the park in 2026, after pilots at Paradise and Sunrise in 2024 and Sunrise in 2025.

Without reservations, these parks can still be crowded. Arrive before 8 a.m. or after mid-afternoon in summer, and expect rangers to hold or divert traffic when parking fills.

How does Rocky Mountain’s timed entry work?

Rocky Mountain National Park used two permit types in 2026. The Bear Lake Road corridor permit, required from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., covered the corridor and the rest of the park. The rest-of-park permit, required from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., covered everything except the Bear Lake Road corridor. Each permit lets you enter within a two-hour window, with no set exit time.

According to the park’s 2026 timed entry announcement, reservations were released on Recreation.gov at 8 a.m. Mountain Time on the first day of each month: May 1 for May 22 to June 30, then June 1 for July, July 1 for August, August 1 for September and September 1 for October. The $2 processing fee is the only charge beyond the entrance fee. Without a permit, you can enter outside the required hours.

How do Acadia’s and Haleakalā’s road reservations work?

Acadia requires a vehicle reservation to drive Cadillac Summit Road to the top of Cadillac Mountain. Per the park’s fee and reservation page, the 2026 season ran May 20 to October 25 and cost $6 per vehicle. Each reservation gives an entry time, does not require a set departure until the road closes to cars at 9 p.m., and does not guarantee a parking space or allow re-entry. Sunrise slots sell out fastest. Without a reservation, you can still hike or bike to the summit.

Haleakalā on Maui requires a reservation for every vehicle entering the park between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., the window for sunrise at the summit. The park fee page says reservations cost $1 and can be booked up to 60 days ahead, with more released 2 days ahead. Fee-free days do not cover the sunrise reservation. Without one, you can enter after 7 a.m. for daytime views and hikes.

How do you book a national park reservation?

All the reservations above are booked on Recreation.gov, by website or app. The process is similar for each park:

  1. Create and sign in to a Recreation.gov account well before the release time, with payment details saved.
  2. Check the release schedule. Parks release in batches, often months ahead plus a smaller share a day or two before.
  3. Pick two or three backup times or dates before the release opens.
  4. Log in a few minutes early and refresh at the release time; popular slots can sell out in minutes.
  5. Keep checking for cancellations in the days before your visit.
  6. Carry your reservation and an entrance pass. A reservation is not an entrance pass, and the entrance fee or an annual pass is still required.

Our guide on how to get Recreation.gov reservations explains release windows, lotteries and cancellation fees in more detail.

What happens if you arrive without a reservation?

At parks with timed entry, rangers turn away vehicles without a valid reservation during the required hours. Your options:

  • Come before or after the required hours. At Rocky Mountain in 2026 that meant before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. for most of the park, and before 5 a.m. or after 6 p.m. for the Bear Lake corridor.
  • Book a guided tour. Commercial tours operating under park permits may enter without individual reservations; check with the operator.
  • Walk, bike or take a shuttle where allowed, such as hiking up Cadillac Mountain at Acadia.
  • Choose a hike that needs no permit, such as Zion’s other trails if you lose the Angels Landing lottery. Our Zion National Park guide lists them.

Do reservations still apply on fee-free days?

Yes. On 2026 fee-free days, entrance fees were waived for U.S. citizens and residents, but parks stated that timed-entry, reservation and permit fees may still apply. Haleakalā, for example, says fee-free days do not cover its sunrise reservation. Fee-free days in 2026 also did not apply to visitors who are not U.S. residents.

Bottom line

In 2026, only a handful of national parks required entry reservations: Rocky Mountain for timed entry, Acadia for Cadillac Summit Road, Haleakalā for sunrise and Carlsbad Caverns for the cave. Arches, Yosemite, Glacier and Mount Rainier dropped theirs. Systems change every year, so check each park’s website in early 2027, set an alarm for release dates and always carry a separate entrance pass.

FAQ

Do you need a reservation for Yellowstone or Grand Canyon?

No. As of November 2026, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon do not require entry reservations. Lodging, campsites and some backcountry trips must still be booked ahead.

Will Yosemite or Arches bring back reservations in 2027?

Neither park had announced 2027 plans as of November 2026. Check their official websites in early 2027, especially if you plan a spring or summer trip.

Is the America the Beautiful pass a reservation?

No. The annual pass covers entrance fees but not timed-entry reservations, permits or their processing fees. You need both where reservations are required.

How far ahead should you book timed entry?

Book as soon as your park’s release opens. In 2026, Rocky Mountain released each month’s permits on the first day of the previous month, and Haleakalā released sunrise slots 60 days ahead.
