Acadia National Park Guide: Cadillac, Island Explorer and Islands
How to plan Acadia on Maine's coast: the Cadillac Mountain vehicle reservation, the Park Loop Road, the fare-free Island Explorer, Bar Harbor and the quieter side of Mount Desert Island, and boat trips to nearby islands.

Acadia National Park, on Mount Desert Island and nearby parts of the Maine coast, is best visited from June to mid-October, with fall color usually peaking in early to mid-October. Entry costs $35 per private vehicle for 7 days as of November 2026, and driving the Cadillac Summit Road required a separate $6 timed vehicle reservation from May 20 to October 25 in 2026. The fare-free Island Explorer bus, which ran full service from late June to mid-October in 2026, is the easiest way to avoid full parking lots.
Most visitors base in Bar Harbor, the main town on the island, about 1 hour 15 minutes from Bangor’s airport and about 5 hours from Boston. Two to three days covers the main sights.
How do Cadillac Summit Road reservations work?
Cadillac Mountain rises 1,530 feet and is the highest point on the US Atlantic coast, which makes its summit a famous sunrise spot. To limit traffic, the park requires a vehicle reservation to drive the 3.5-mile Cadillac Summit Road in season.
| Detail | 2026 rule |
|---|---|
| Season | May 20 to October 25 |
| Cost | $6 per vehicle, on Recreation.gov, plus the park entrance pass |
| Types | Sunrise or daytime time slots |
| Entry | Enter during your time slot; no re-entry on the same reservation |
| Without a reservation | Hike, bike or take a taxi or tour; the Island Explorer does not go up the summit road |
- In recent seasons, most reservations were released in two batches: one about 90 days ahead and the rest 2 days ahead. Sunrise slots in summer and fall go first.
- Hiking up is free of the reservation: the North Ridge Trail and South Ridge Trail reach the summit, the second from Blackwoods Campground.
- After October 25, the road stays open without reservations until it closes for winter.

What can you see on the Park Loop Road?
The Park Loop Road is a 27-mile scenic drive, much of it one-way, linking Acadia’s best-known stops on the east side of Mount Desert Island. It closes to cars each year from December 1 to April 14, except two short sections.
- Sieur de Monts: nature center, wild gardens and the start of several trails.
- Sand Beach: a small beach between granite headlands; the water rarely tops the 50s °F.
- Ocean Path: an easy walk along the cliffs from Sand Beach past Thunder Hole to Otter Cliff.
- Thunder Hole: an inlet where waves can boom about two hours before high tide.
- Jordan Pond: a clear glacial lake with the Bubbles behind it, a lakeside path and the historic Jordan Pond House.
- Cadillac Mountain: by reservation in season.
Off the loop, the carriage roads, about 45 miles of broken-stone roads built for horse-drawn carriages, are closed to cars and ideal for biking and walking. Bass Harbor Head Light and the trails around Southwest Harbor sit on the quieter western side of the island.
How do you use the Island Explorer bus?
The Island Explorer is a fare-free bus system that connects Bar Harbor, campgrounds, the villages of Mount Desert Island and the main park stops, including Sand Beach, Jordan Pond and the carriage roads. In 2026, spring service on a few routes began May 20, and the full system ran from June 23 to October 12, according to the operator’s schedule.
- Riders still need a park entrance pass.
- The bus does not go up Cadillac Mountain.
- Buses fill on summer afternoons; board at the Bar Harbor Village Green or the Acadia Gateway Center park-and-ride outside town.
- A separate route serves the Schoodic Peninsula from the Winter Harbor ferry landing.
The park’s Island Explorer page links current routes and schedules.
Which Maine islands can you visit as day trips from Acadia?
Mount Desert Island sits among dozens of smaller islands, and several are easy day trips by ferry or mail boat.
| Island | How to get there | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Bar Island | Walk across a gravel bar from Bar Harbor at low tide | Short trail and town views; cross within about 1.5 hours of low tide or wait for the next one |
| Cranberry Isles (Islesford, Great Cranberry) | Ferry from Northeast Harbor or Southwest Harbor | Quiet villages, walking, harbor views |
| Swans Island | State ferry from Bass Harbor | Working fishing island, lighthouse, biking |
| Isle au Haut | Mail boat from Stonington, about 1.5 hours’ drive from Bar Harbor | Remote section of Acadia with rugged trails |
| Schoodic Peninsula (mainland) | Drive about 1 hour, or summer ferry to Winter Harbor | Acadia’s quieter mainland section, surf on granite ledges |
| Monhegan Island | Ferry from Port Clyde or Boothbay Harbor, 2–3 hours’ drive from Bar Harbor | Artists’ island with cliff trails; a long day |
Ferry schedules shrink after mid-October, and some boats stop for the winter. Book summer crossings a day or more ahead, and check weather, since fog and wind can cancel small-boat trips.

Where should you stay for Acadia?
- Bar Harbor: most hotels, inns and restaurants, closest to the Park Loop Road and the bus hub.
- Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor: the quieter western side, near Bass Harbor Head Light and ferries to the Cranberry Isles and Swans Island.
- Northeast Harbor: small and upscale, with boats to the Cranberry Isles.
- Ellsworth and Trenton: chain hotels on the mainland, cheaper but 20 to 40 minutes from the park.
- Park campgrounds: Blackwoods, Seawall and Schoodic Woods, reserved on Recreation.gov.

What safety points matter in Acadia?
- Cliffs and surf: stay back from wet ledges at Thunder Hole and along Ocean Path; rogue waves have swept people off the rocks.
- Iron-rung trails: the Precipice and Beehive trails climb ladders on exposed cliffs. Skip them in rain, with young children or if you fear heights; the Precipice is often closed in spring and early summer for nesting peregrine falcons.
- Tides: the Bar Island crossing floods quickly; note the low-tide time before you walk over.
Bottom line
Plan Acadia for June to mid-October, buy the $35 vehicle pass or use an annual pass, and reserve a $6 Cadillac Summit Road slot early if you want sunrise from the summit. Use the free Island Explorer to skip parking stress, base in Bar Harbor or the quieter west side, and add a ferry to the Cranberry Isles or a low-tide walk to Bar Island.
