A 5-day Texas Hill Country road trip loops about 300 miles from Austin through Johnson City and Fredericksburg to Enchanted Rock, then south to Wimberley and Gruene and on to San Antonio. The best time is mid-March to April, when bluebonnets usually peak along the roadsides, or October and November, when the heat breaks. Book an Enchanted Rock day pass up to 30 days ahead, because the park closes to visitors without reservations once it fills.

Fly into Austin and out of San Antonio, about 80 miles apart, or close the loop with a 1.5-hour drive back to Austin.

What does the 5-day Hill Country route look like?

Leg Approx. miles Drive time

Johnson City to Fredericksburg 30 35 min
Fredericksburg to Enchanted Rock 18 25 min
Fredericksburg to Wimberley 75 1.5 hr
Wimberley to Gruene (New Braunfels) 25 35 min
Gruene to San Antonio 35 40 min

Distances are short, so the trip is about stopping: small towns, swimming holes, dance halls and back roads such as Ranch Road 1 along the Pedernales River.

How should you spend 5 days in the Texas Hill Country?

Day 1: Austin

Tour the Texas State Capitol, which offers free guided tours, then walk or paddle along Lady Bird Lake. Swim at Barton Springs Pool, fed by springs that stay cool all year. At dusk from about March to October, watch the large colony of Mexican free-tailed bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. End with live music on South Congress or in the Red River district. Base: Austin.

Day 2: Austin to Johnson City and Fredericksburg

Head west on US-290. If you have a reservation, detour to Hamilton Pool Preserve, a collapsed grotto with a waterfall; Travis County requires reservations every day and does not guarantee swimming, which depends on water quality. Otherwise, stop at Pedernales Falls State Park for its stepped limestone falls.

In Johnson City, visit the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park boyhood home, then continue to the LBJ Ranch near Stonewall. Entry to the national historical park is free. Wineries line US-290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg if someone else is driving. Base: Fredericksburg.

Day 3: Enchanted Rock and Fredericksburg

Drive 18 miles north to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area for an early climb. The pink granite dome rises about 425 feet above the surrounding land to 1,825 feet above sea level. The Summit Trail is short but steep, about 0.6 miles each way; the Loop Trail circles the dome in about 4.5 miles. Entry costs $8 for adults 13 and older, and children 12 and under are free, as of November 2026. Reserve a day pass on the Texas Parks and Wildlife page for Enchanted Rock. The park is also a certified dark-sky park; our guide to dark sky places for stargazing explains how to time a night visit.

In spring, drive the Willow City Loop, a narrow 13-mile ranch road known for wildflowers. The land on both sides is private, so stay on the road and pull over only where it is safe. Spend the afternoon on Fredericksburg’s Main Street, founded by German immigrants in 1846, and at the National Museum of the Pacific War. Detour to Luckenbach, a tiny former trading post with a dance hall and music most days. Base: Fredericksburg.

Day 4: Wimberley, Devil’s Backbone and Gruene

Drive southeast through Blanco to Wimberley, a creekside town known for its swimming holes. Jacob’s Well, a deep artesian spring, and Blue Hole Regional Park, a cypress-shaded swimming spot, have required advance reservations for swimming in summer in recent years; check the county and city pages before you go. Take the Devil’s Backbone scenic drive (FM 32) for ridge-top views, then continue to the Gruene Historic District in New Braunfels for an evening at Gruene Hall, a dance hall dating to the 1870s. Base: Wimberley or New Braunfels.

Day 5: San Antonio

Arrive early at The Alamo, where entry to the church is free but timed reservations are recommended. Walk the River Walk, then drive or bike the Mission Trail to San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Mission San José is the largest of its four missions, and entry is free. Fly home from San Antonio or drive back to Austin.

When is bluebonnet season in Texas?

Bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, usually bloom from mid-March to mid-April, with peak in most of the Hill Country in late March and early April. The timing and density depend on fall and winter rain: a wet winter brings thick fields, a dry one brings sparse patches. Indian paintbrush, winecups and other wildflowers follow into May.

  • Good areas include the Willow City Loop, Ranch Road 1 near Stonewall, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin and roadsides along US-290.
  • Texas law does not specifically ban picking bluebonnets, but trespassing on private land is illegal, and stopping on highway shoulders is dangerous. Use pullouts and leave the flowers for others.
  • Watch for fire ants and snakes when stepping into tall grass for photos.

What should you book ahead?

  1. Enchanted Rock day pass: up to 30 days ahead, especially for weekends, holidays and spring break.
  2. Hamilton Pool Preserve: required every day; reservations open in blocks on the Travis County parks site.
  3. Jacob’s Well and Blue Hole swimming: in summer, a week or more ahead.
  4. Fredericksburg lodging: 1 to 3 months ahead for bluebonnet weekends and fall festivals.
  5. Wine tastings: many wineries now ask for reservations on weekends.

What safety points matter in the Hill Country?

The Hill Country is one of the most flash-flood-prone regions in the country, as the deadly July 2025 floods along the Guadalupe River showed. Low-water crossings can flood fast after storms upstream. Follow the National Weather Service rule to turn around, don’t drown: never drive or walk into floodwater.

  • In summer, hike Enchanted Rock early; the granite gets very hot by midday, and there is little shade.
  • Stay off the dome during lightning and when the rock is wet.
  • Swim only where allowed, and check bacteria and water-level notices after rain.

With 7 days: add Lost Maples State Natural Area for fall color in late October or November, Garner State Park on the Frio River, and a night in Kerrville or Bandera. Our list of the best state parks in the US includes more Texas options.

Bottom line

Five days covers the Hill Country’s essentials: Austin, LBJ country, Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock, Wimberley’s swimming holes, Gruene and San Antonio. Go between mid-March and April for bluebonnets or in fall for cooler weather, reserve Enchanted Rock and any swimming spots ahead, and never cross a flooded road.

FAQ

When is the best time to see bluebonnets in Texas?

Usually late March to early April, with blooms from mid-March to mid-April in most years. Rainy winters bring the best displays. Check local wildflower reports a week or two before you go.

Do you need a reservation for Enchanted Rock?

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends, holidays and in spring. The park closes to visitors without reservations once it reaches capacity. Day passes can be booked up to 30 days ahead.

Is Fredericksburg or Wimberley a better base?

Fredericksburg is the better base for Enchanted Rock, wineries and LBJ sites. Wimberley is closer to swimming holes, Gruene and San Antonio. On a 5-day trip, spending two nights in Fredericksburg and one in Wimberley works well.

Can you swim at Hamilton Pool?

Sometimes. Travis County requires reservations every day, but swimming depends on bacteria levels and safety conditions, so it is not guaranteed. Check the preserve’s status the day before.
