The best summer vacations in the US are in places that stay cool: mountain parks such as Glacier, Grand Teton and Rocky Mountain, big lakes such as Lake Tahoe and Lake Michigan’s dunes, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and the Maine coast around Acadia. Book early, because June through August is peak season, and skip low deserts like Death Valley, where July highs average 116°F.

Where should you go for a summer vacation?

Summer works best where elevation, latitude or ocean water keep temperatures moderate. The table compares the strongest choices; weather is typical, and crowd levels are for July and August.

Which mountain parks are best in summer?

The northern Rockies are at their best in July and August, the only months when every road and most trails are reliably free of snow.

  • Glacier: Going-to-the-Sun Road usually opens fully between late June and mid-July, depending on snow. For 2026, the park did not require vehicle reservations, but it managed congestion on the road with parking limits at Logan Pass and temporary vehicle diversions when traffic reached safety limits. Check the 2027 rules in spring; our Glacier National Park guide covers regions and lodging.
  • Rocky Mountain: timed-entry permits were required in summer 2026, starting May 22, for most of the park and separately for the Bear Lake Road corridor.
  • Yellowstone and Grand Teton: all main roads are open, wildlife is active and lodges are full; reserve in-park rooms as early as possible.

Late summer brings a growing chance of wildfire smoke across the West, especially in August and September. Smoke can close trails and hide views, so keep plans flexible and check air quality before hiking.

Which lakes and coasts stay comfortable in summer?

Big lakes and northern coasts are natural air conditioners. Lake Tahoe sits at about 6,200 feet, so summer days are warm rather than hot and the lake stays cold even in August. Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan combines high dunes, beaches and small harbor towns, and the water is usually at its warmest in late July and August. Other strong lake trips include Lake George in New York’s Adirondacks and Flathead Lake near Glacier; our guide to the best lake vacations in the US compares them.

On the Maine coast, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are busiest in July and August. Driving the Cadillac Summit Road required a vehicle reservation from May 20 to October 25 in 2026. The ocean stays cold enough that most visitors only wade.

Is Alaska worth it in summer?

Summer is the main season for Alaska, and June to August is when most tours, lodges and the Alaska Railroad’s full schedules operate. Daylight is long: around the June solstice, Anchorage gets more than 19 hours of daylight and Fairbanks close to 22. June is usually the driest of the summer months, while August is greener but wetter, and mosquitoes are common in interior areas in early summer. Book Denali buses, Kenai Fjords boat tours and lodging months ahead. Our 10-day Alaska itinerary covers Seward, Talkeetna, Denali and Fairbanks.

Is the Pacific Northwest good in summer?

Yes, it is one of the most reliable summer regions. July through September is the driest stretch in western Washington and Oregon, with mild temperatures in Seattle and Portland. Mount Rainier’s subalpine meadows usually reach their best wildflower display around early August, according to the National Park Service, and Olympic National Park’s rainforest, mountains and coast are easiest to visit in the dry months. The outer coast can be foggy and cool even in July, so pack a jacket.

Where is too hot for a summer vacation?

Low deserts are dangerous in midsummer. Death Valley averages a July high of 116°F and a low of 88°F at Furnace Creek, according to the NPS Death Valley weather page. Phoenix, Las Vegas, Palm Springs and the bottom of the Grand Canyon regularly exceed 100°F as well.

  • Monsoon season: from about July to September, the Southwest gets afternoon thunderstorms, lightning and flash floods; avoid slot canyons when storms are possible.
  • Hurricane season: the Atlantic season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the most activity from August to October, which matters for Florida and Gulf Coast trips.
  • Heat safety: hike early, carry more water than you think you need and know the signs of heat illness; the National Weather Service heat safety page explains them.

Bottom line

Go north or go high in summer. Glacier, the Tetons, Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain are at their best in July and August; Alaska and the Pacific Northwest offer long, mild days; and the Maine coast and big lakes give you water without the heat. Book lodging and park reservations early, keep plans flexible for smoke and storms, and save the deserts for spring, fall or winter.
