National Park Lodges: How to Book a Room Inside the Park
In-park rooms are sold by private operators on fixed opening days. Here is who runs the lodges, when each park opens bookings and what to do when they are full.

Lodges inside U.S. national parks are run by private concessioners under contract with the National Park Service, and you book them directly with that company, not through the Park Service or Recreation.gov. The most popular lodges open reservations about 13 months ahead: Yellowstone on the 5th of each month for the same month a year later, Grand Canyon’s South Rim on the 1st, and Yosemite 366 days in advance. Expect a first-night deposit at booking.
Below are the operators and booking windows for major parks as of November 2026, the deposit and cancellation rules, and what to do when the lodges are full.
Who runs the lodges in national parks?
Each park’s lodging is operated by one or more companies the Park Service has approved, and the park’s own lodging page links to the official booking site. Booking through that link avoids look-alike reseller sites.
| Park | Lodging operator | Main lodges | Booking window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellowstone | Yellowstone National Park Lodges (Xanterra) | Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel, Canyon Lodge and six other areas | 13 months; opens on the 5th of each month |
| Grand Canyon South Rim | Xanterra; Delaware North | El Tovar, Bright Angel, Kachina, Thunderbird, Maswik (Xanterra); Yavapai Lodge (Delaware North) | Xanterra: 13 months, opens on the 1st at midnight Mountain time |
| Yosemite | Yosemite Hospitality | The Ahwahnee, Yosemite Valley Lodge, Curry Village | 366 days ahead |
| Grand Teton | Grand Teton Lodge Company and others | Jackson Lake Lodge, Jenny Lake Lodge, Colter Bay Village | Check the operator |

| Shenandoah | Delaware North | Skyland, Big Meadows Lodge, Lewis Mountain Cabins | Check the operator |
| Olympic | Several operators | Lake Crescent Lodge, Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort, Log Cabin Resort, Kalaloch Lodge | Check each lodge |

Is Grand Canyon lodging open right now?
Not until later in November 2026. A flash flood in the inner canyon on August 29, 2026, damaged the waterline that supplies the South Rim, and the park halted overnight stays in its lodges from August 31. Xanterra’s update of November 3, 2026, says closures of Bright Angel, Kachina, Maswik, Thunderbird and El Tovar are extended through November 19, with reopening planned for November 20, 2026. Phantom Ranch is closed through at least January 31, 2027. The rim, viewpoints and Rim Trail remain open to day visitors, and hotels in Tusayan, outside the park, were not affected. On the North Rim, the historic Grand Canyon Lodge burned in July 2025, so there is no lodging inside the park on that side. Check the park’s lodging page for the latest status.
How do you book a lodge on opening day?
For the most popular lodges, summer dates can go fast once they open. These steps help:
- Work out your opening date. For a July 2027 stay at Yellowstone, bookings open July 5, 2026; at the Grand Canyon South Rim, July 1, 2026.
- Create an account on the concessioner’s site ahead of time if it offers one.
- Know the opening time and time zone. Xanterra’s Grand Canyon bookings open at midnight Mountain time.
- Book the hardest night first. If you need several lodges, reserve the most popular one first and build around it.
- Have backups for room type and location; a rustic cabin may be open when lodge rooms are gone.
- Note the cancellation deadline the moment you book.
Lodge reservations are only one piece; our national park booking timeline lists when campsites, timed entry and tours open.
How much do national park lodges cost?
Rates for in-park lodging are set by the concessioners and, in most cases, approved by the National Park Service. They span a wide range, from rustic cabins with shared bathrooms to historic hotel suites. As a rough planning range for peak summer, expect about $150–$250 a night for basic cabins and simple rooms and about $300–$600 or more for premium rooms in historic lodges, before tax. Shoulder-season rates are often lower.
Many in-park rooms are simple by hotel standards. Yellowstone’s concessioner, for example, says its rooms and cabins have heat but no air conditioning, and only suites at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel have TVs. For a full budget at one park, see how much a trip to Yellowstone costs.
What are the deposit and cancellation rules?
Most park lodges take a deposit equal to the first night’s rate when you book. Cancellation windows vary a lot between parks, as these two examples from November 2026 show:
| Rule | Yellowstone (Xanterra) | Grand Canyon South Rim (Xanterra) |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | First night’s rate at each location | First night plus tax for each room |
| Full refund | Cancel at least 30 days before arrival | Cancel at least 2 days before arrival |
| Late changes | $25 nonrefundable fee for changes or cancellations within 30 days | Deposit forfeited within 2 days |
| Deposit lost | Within 7 days of a summer arrival (14 days in winter) | Within 2 days; Phantom Ranch needs 45 days’ notice |
Both operators say they may cancel reservations that look like they were made by bots, as duplicates, or to hold inventory. Book only rooms you plan to use.
What if the park lodges are full?
Sold-out dates often open up later, and there are good alternatives nearby:
- Check for cancellations regularly, especially just before refund deadlines such as Yellowstone’s 30-day mark.
- Stay in a gateway town such as West Yellowstone, Tusayan, Springdale, Estes Park or Mariposa, usually 5 to 60 minutes from the park’s main sights.
- Camp inside the park. Most park campgrounds book on Recreation.gov, often about six months ahead.
- Enter the lotteries. Phantom Ranch at the Grand Canyon and the High Sierra Camps in Yosemite are awarded by lottery.
- Shift your dates to May, September or October, when more rooms are free.
For Yosemite in particular, our Yosemite National Park guide compares staying inside the park with nearby towns, and our comparison of the Grand Canyon South Rim and North Rim covers lodging on each side.
Bottom line
Book national park lodges directly with the park’s concessioner, using the link on the park’s nps.gov lodging page, as soon as your dates open: 13 months ahead at Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, and 366 days ahead at Yosemite. Pay the first-night deposit, note the cancellation deadline, and keep checking for cancellations if your first choice is full. Grand Canyon South Rim lodges are closed through November 19, 2026, with reopening planned for November 20.
FAQ
Can I book national park lodges on Recreation.gov?
No. Recreation.gov handles campgrounds, permits, tickets and some cabins on federal land, but in-park lodges are booked with each park’s concessioner. The park’s lodging page on nps.gov links to the right company.
How far in advance should I book Old Faithful Inn?
As early as possible. Yellowstone National Park Lodges takes bookings up to 13 months ahead, opening each month’s dates on the 5th of the month a year earlier, and summer rooms at Old Faithful are among the first to go.
Do national park lodges have air conditioning?
Many do not. Yellowstone’s lodges have heat but no air conditioning, with fans available, and many historic lodges in cooler mountain parks are similar. Check the room description if you are visiting in a heat wave.
Are Grand Canyon lodges open?
South Rim lodges are closed for overnight stays through November 19, 2026, after flood damage to the park’s waterline, with reopening planned for November 20. Phantom Ranch is closed through at least January 31, 2027.
