Best Small Towns in New England for Fall and Summer Trips
Six New England towns that reward a trip, two in the Vermont hills, one at the foot of the White Mountains and three on the Maine coast, with the season when each one is at its best.

The best small towns in New England for a first trip are Stowe and Woodstock in Vermont, North Conway in New Hampshire, and Camden, Bar Harbor and Kennebunkport on the Maine coast. The inland towns are strongest in fall, from late September to mid-October, while the Maine coast towns shine in July and August and get their own color around mid-October.
Which New England small towns are best, and how far are they from Boston?
All six towns are within a day’s drive of Boston, which is the usual starting point for flights and rental cars. Foliage windows below are typical; actual timing shifts by a week or more from year to year.
| Town | State | Drive from Boston | Typical peak color | Best summer reason to go |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stowe | Vermont | About 200 miles, 3.5 hours | Late September–early October | Hiking Mount Mansfield, the village recreation path |
| Woodstock | Vermont | About 140 miles, 2.5 hours | Early–mid October | Farm museum, covered bridges, Quechee Gorge |
| North Conway | New Hampshire | About 140 miles, 2.5–3 hours | Late September (high) to mid-October (valley) | White Mountains trails, swimming holes, scenic railroad |
| Camden | Maine | About 190 miles, 3.5 hours | Mid-October | Harbor, windjammer sailing, Camden Hills State Park |
| Bar Harbor | Maine | About 270 miles, 4.5–5 hours | Mid-October | Acadia National Park, whale watching |
| Kennebunkport | Maine | About 85 miles, 1.5–2 hours | Mid- to late October | Beaches, Dock Square, coastal walks |
Is fall or summer better for New England towns?
Fall is better for the Vermont and New Hampshire towns, and summer is better for the Maine coast. Inland, hillsides of sugar maple and birch make October the signature season, but it is also the most expensive and crowded time, especially on the long weekend around Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day, the second Monday in October. On the coast, July and August bring warm days, open-air lobster shacks and boat trips, although Maine ocean water stays cold for swimming even in midsummer.
| Factor | Fall (mid-September to late October) | Summer (late June to August) |
|---|---|---|
| Main draw | Foliage, harvest festivals, cool hiking weather | Beaches, sailing, swimming holes, long days |
| Strongest towns | Stowe, Woodstock, North Conway | Bar Harbor, Camden, Kennebunkport |
| Weather | Crisp days, frosty mornings, early sunsets | Warm days, cool nights inland, fog on the coast |
| Crowds and prices | Highest on October weekends | High in July and August, especially weekends |
| Booking | Lodging for peak weekends often sells out months ahead | Book coastal lodging in winter or spring |
What makes each town worth the trip?
Stowe, Vermont
Stowe sits below Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak at 4,393 feet. The village is compact, with a white-steepled church, inns and a paved recreation path that follows the river for about 5 miles. In fall, the drive over Smugglers’ Notch on Route 108 is one of the state’s best, though the narrow notch road closes in winter. In winter, Stowe is a ski town, and the resort is on the Epic Pass.
Woodstock, Vermont
Woodstock is the picture-book option: a village green, a covered bridge in the center of town, and well-kept 19th-century homes. Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, a conservation history site with carriage roads through managed forest, is on the edge of town, next to the Billings Farm museum. Quechee Gorge is a short drive east. In December, the town’s Wassail Weekend, with a horse parade, is scheduled for December 11–13, 2026.
North Conway, New Hampshire
North Conway is the base for the eastern White Mountains. The Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) runs about 34 miles from Conway to Lincoln through the White Mountain National Forest, with no gas stations or towns along the way; many pullouts and trailheads require a forest recreation pass. Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast at 6,288 feet, is about 20 miles north, reachable by auto road or cog railway in season; its summit weather can be severe even in summer. New Hampshire has no general sales tax, which keeps the outlet stores busy.
Camden, Maine
Camden wraps around a small harbor backed by the Camden Hills. A road and a short trail climb Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park, with views over Penobscot Bay. Multi-day windjammer sailing trips leave from Camden and nearby Rockland in the warmer months. The town is also a good midpoint on the drive between southern Maine and Acadia.
Bar Harbor, Maine
Bar Harbor is the main gateway to Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. Driving the Cadillac Summit Road requires a vehicle reservation from May 20 to October 25, 2026, at $6 per vehicle on Recreation.gov, in addition to a park entrance pass, according to the NPS Cadillac Summit Road reservations page. The free Island Explorer bus usually runs from late June to mid-October and cuts down on parking stress. For trails, carriage roads and the Park Loop Road, see our Acadia National Park guide.
Kennebunkport, Maine
Kennebunkport is the closest of the six to Boston and the most beach-oriented. Dock Square has shops and restaurants, Ocean Avenue follows a rocky shore past large summer homes, and sandy beaches are a few minutes away; beach parking is limited and often requires a permit or a paid lot in summer. The Christmas Prelude festival runs December 3–13, 2026. If you want a beach-first summer trip with more variety, compare it with our Cape Cod guide.
How do you link several towns into one trip?
A loop from Boston can cover all six in about 7 to 9 days. Approximate drive times between stops:
- Boston to Kennebunkport: 1.5–2 hours.
- Kennebunkport to Camden: about 2.5 hours.
- Camden to Bar Harbor: about 1.75 hours. Spend at least two nights here for Acadia.
- Bar Harbor to North Conway: about 4 hours across western Maine.
- North Conway to Woodstock: about 2–2.5 hours, via the Kancamagus Highway if time allows.
- Woodstock to Stowe: about 1.75 hours.
- Stowe to Boston: about 3.5 hours.
In fall, run the loop in the reverse direction from how the color moves: start inland in Vermont and New Hampshire in late September or early October, and finish on the Maine coast in mid-October. Our New England fall foliage road trip lays out a day-by-day version.
When should you book, and what does it cost?
For October weekends, reserve lodging as early as you can; many inns in Stowe, Woodstock and North Conway fill months ahead, and minimum-stay rules are common. For July and August on the Maine coast, winter or early spring is a sensible time to book. Rates vary widely by town and season, so compare midweek and weekend prices; Sunday through Thursday nights are often noticeably cheaper in both seasons.
- Budget: chain motels or campgrounds outside the town centers, picnic lunches, free trails.
- Mid-range: family-run inns and motels in or near town, one or two paid attractions per day.
- Comfort: historic inns or resorts on the village green or harbor, dinners out every night, boat trips.
Bottom line
Pick Stowe, Woodstock or North Conway for a fall trip built around color and hiking, and Bar Harbor, Camden or Kennebunkport for a summer trip built around the coast. If you can travel only once, the first half of October lets you catch peak color inland and still see the Maine towns before they close up for winter.
