The best ski towns in the US, meaning real towns with year-round life rather than just a resort base, are Park City (Utah), Aspen (Colorado), Jackson (Wyoming), Stowe (Vermont), Taos (New Mexico), Telluride (Colorado) and Big Sky (Montana). For the 2026–27 season, Park City Mountain, Stowe and Telluride are covered by the Epic Pass, while Aspen Snowmass, Jackson Hole, Taos and Big Sky are on the Ikon Pass. Most of these seasons run from late November to early or mid-April.

Below is a comparison table, a short profile of each town, which pass to buy and how to keep costs down.

Season dates are typical and depend on snow; price levels compare lodging and lift costs in peak season.

What makes a ski town different from a ski resort?

A ski town has its own history, residents and street life that continue in summer; a ski resort is mainly lodging built around the lifts. Ski towns usually offer more restaurants and non-ski activities, which matters for groups with non-skiers. The trade-off is that many town centers sit a short bus or gondola ride from the slopes rather than at the lift.

Which US ski towns are best, and why?

Park City, Utah

Park City is the easiest major ski town to reach: Salt Lake City’s airport is about 40 minutes away. Its old silver-mining Main Street has restaurants and bars, and two big resorts sit on its edges: Park City Mountain (Epic) and Deer Valley (Ikon), which does not allow snowboarding. The Sundance Film Festival, long held in Park City in January, moves to Boulder, Colorado, from 2027.

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen is the most complete ski town: a Victorian mining town with four separate mountains, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass, linked by free shuttles. The full Ikon Pass gives seven days combined across all four for 2026–27, and the Ikon Base Pass gives five days at Snowmass only. Aspen is also the priciest town on this list. See our Aspen vs Vail comparison.

Jackson, Wyoming

Jackson combines a Western town with some of the steepest lift-served terrain in North America at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, about 12 miles away in Teton Village. The resort planned to open on November 27, 2026. Ikon and Mountain Collective holders must reserve ski days. Details are in our Jackson Hole guide.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe is New England’s classic ski village, with a white-steepled church and inns along the road to Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. Stowe Mountain Resort is owned by Vail Resorts and on the Epic Pass. Expect colder, icier conditions than in the West and a strong après and dining scene.

Taos, New Mexico

Taos offers adobe architecture, galleries and Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Taos Ski Valley about 30–40 minutes up the canyon. The ski area is known for steep, high terrain and lots of sun. It is on the Ikon Pass and is usually less expensive than the Colorado and Wyoming towns.

Telluride, Colorado

Telluride is the most scenic ski town in the country for many visitors: a historic town in a box canyon connected to the ski area by a free gondola. The full Epic Pass includes seven days at Telluride for 2026–27; holders must reserve in advance and carry a physical pass card. It is remote, so plan on flying into Telluride or Montrose.

Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky is the least “town” of the seven, with a growing Town Center below a huge ski area topped by Lone Peak. It offers vast terrain and fewer crowds than most big resorts. It is on the Ikon Pass, with seven days on the full pass, and planned to open in late November 2026. Bozeman’s airport is about an hour away through Gallatin Canyon.

Epic or Ikon: which pass covers which town?

Pick the pass that covers the town you will visit most. For the 2026–27 season:

  • Epic Pass: Park City Mountain and Stowe (both owned by Vail Resorts) and seven days at Telluride.
  • Ikon Pass: Aspen Snowmass, Jackson Hole, Taos, Big Sky and Deer Valley, each with seven days on the full pass.
  • Mountain Collective: two days at each partner resort, including Aspen Snowmass and Jackson Hole.

Epic Pass prices for adults launched at $1,089 in March 2026 and rose through the fall; the Ikon Pass was listed from $1,449 for adults. Both passes get more expensive as the season approaches, and sales usually stop in early winter.

How much does a ski town trip cost?

Ski towns are among the most expensive places to vacation in the US. The biggest costs are lodging and lift tickets.

  • Lift tickets: peak-date window prices at the largest Western resorts have passed $300 per day in recent seasons. Buying online in advance is usually much cheaper, and Vail Resorts now prices tickets lower for skiers who buy roughly a month ahead.
  • Lodging: Christmas to New Year’s and Presidents’ Day weekend are the most expensive weeks. Early December, most of January and late season are better value.
  • Savings: stay in a nearby town and use the bus, book multi-day tickets, and rent gear away from the base area.

When is the best time to ski?

January and February usually offer the most reliable snow in the West; March brings longer, sunnier days and often deep spring storms. Early-season terrain in late November and early December can be limited. If you can travel flexibly, our guide to where to go in January lists more winter options.

How do you stay safe in ski country?

Stay inside resort boundaries unless you have avalanche training, a partner and rescue gear; out-of-bounds terrain is not controlled. Check the avalanche forecast before any backcountry trip; in Colorado, that is the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. At high-elevation towns such as Telluride, Aspen and Taos, drink water and take the first day easy to reduce altitude symptoms, and drive with winter-ready tires on mountain roads.

Bottom line

For an easy first ski-town trip, choose Park City. For the full luxury ski-town experience, choose Aspen; for steep terrain and the Tetons, Jackson; for New England tradition, Stowe; for value and culture, Taos; for scenery, Telluride; and for space, Big Sky. Match your choice to your pass, book lodging early for holidays and buy lift tickets in advance.

FAQ

Which US ski town is the cheapest?

Of these seven, Taos is usually the most affordable for lodging and dining. Park City and Stowe sit in the middle, and Aspen, Jackson, Telluride and Big Sky are the most expensive.

Can you use the Epic Pass in Aspen?

No. Aspen Snowmass is on the Ikon Pass and the Mountain Collective, not the Epic Pass. In Colorado, Epic covers resorts such as Vail, Breckenridge and Crested Butte, plus limited days at Telluride.

Which ski town is best for beginners?

Park City and Aspen are strong choices. Park City Mountain has plenty of gentle terrain near town, and Aspen’s Buttermilk and Snowmass are well suited to beginners.

Do you need reservations to ski with a pass?

At some resorts, yes. For 2026–27, Jackson Hole requires reservations for Ikon and Mountain Collective holders, and Telluride requires them for Epic holders. Most other resorts do not.
