Destin, Florida, is the better pick for emerald-green water, boating at Crab Island, fishing charters and resort-style shopping and dining. Gulf Shores, Alabama, with neighboring Orange Beach, suits a relaxed family beach week, with Gulf State Park’s trails, pier and campground and often more choice of mid-priced condos. Both have white quartz sand, sit about 90 to 100 miles apart (roughly 2 hours by car) and run on Central Time.

How do Gulf Shores and Destin compare at a glance?

The two towns share the same stretch of northern Gulf Coast and similar weather, so the differences come down to atmosphere, access and what you want to do off the sand.

Which has the better beaches and water?

Both beaches have fine white quartz sand that stays relatively cool underfoot. Destin’s water is famous for its deep emerald color, especially near East Pass and on calm summer days. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach can look just as clear in calm weather, though the water near Mobile Bay can be greener or murkier after heavy rain.

Public access is a bigger practical difference. The City of Gulf Shores lists eight public beach access locations, and Gulf State Park adds more beachfront with a pavilion. In Destin, the city’s beach information page lists a handful of public beach parks, plus Henderson Beach State Park, which has over a mile of beach and charges a daily admission fee. If you are not staying on the beach, check parking before you book. For more beaches with similar water, see our list of clear-water beaches in the US.

What are the beach rules in each town?

Rules are stricter than many first-time visitors expect, and both towns enforce them. Here is what the official city pages listed in November 2026.

Rule Gulf Shores public beaches Destin beaches

What is there to do in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach?

  • Gulf State Park: a fishing and education pier, miles of paved Backcountry Trail for biking and birding, kayaking on Lake Shelby, a nature center, cabins, a lodge and a campground with 496 improved sites plus a 104-site RV resort.
  • Orange Beach: dolphin cruises, charter fishing out of Perdido Pass and The Wharf entertainment area.
  • Fort Morgan State Historic Site: a 19th-century fort at the tip of the Fort Morgan peninsula, west of Gulf Shores, with a car ferry across Mobile Bay to Dauphin Island nearby.

What is there to do in Destin?

  • Crab Island: a shallow sandbar in Choctawhatchee Bay near the Destin bridge, reached only by boat, where boats anchor and people wade. It is crowded on summer weekends, and water depth changes with the tide.
  • Destin Harbor: charter fishing fleets, dolphin cruises, boat rentals and waterfront restaurants.
  • Henderson Beach State Park: dunes, boardwalks, a campground and over a mile of beach.
  • Scenic 30A and South Walton: beach towns such as Seaside and Grayton Beach, plus Grayton Beach and Topsail Hill Preserve state parks, about 20 to 40 minutes east.
  • Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach: more beaches and family attractions just west across the bridge.

Which is cheaper and less crowded?

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach often have more mid-range condo choices than Destin, but rates overlap heavily and depend on the week, the building and how close you are to the sand. Compare the same dates in both before deciding. Destin’s resorts, harbor dining and boat rentals can push a trip budget higher.

  • Busiest times in both: June through early August, July 4 week and spring break in March.
  • Quieter times: late April to May, and September to October after schools return.
  • Savings: book Saturday-to-Saturday rentals early, stay a block or two back from the beach, and cook some meals.

When is the best time to visit Gulf Shores or Destin?

The swimming season runs roughly May through October. Average water temperatures at NOAA’s Pensacola tide station, between the two towns, were:

Month Average water temp, 2023–2024 What to expect
March 72°F Spring break crowds; water still cool for many swimmers
May 79°F Warm water, fewer crowds than summer
July 88°F Hottest and busiest; afternoon thunderstorms
September 84°F Warm water and lighter crowds; peak hurricane risk
November 72°F Mild days, quiet beaches, some seasonal closures

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores in September 2020, a reminder to book refundable lodging in late summer and fall and to follow local evacuation orders.

Rip currents are the main hazard at both beaches. Learn the flag colors, swim near lifeguards, and check the National Weather Service rip current safety page. Purple flags mean dangerous marine life, often jellyfish. Our guide to the best beaches in the US covers rip current escape steps.

Which should you choose?

  • Families with young kids: Gulf Shores, for Gulf State Park, simpler logistics and calmer evenings.
  • Boaters and anglers: Destin, for Crab Island, the harbor and charter fleets.
  • Couples and groups who want nightlife: Destin and nearby 30A.
  • Campers and cyclists: Gulf Shores, for the Gulf State Park campground and Backcountry Trail.
  • Travelers flying in: Destin, if you can use the Destin–Fort Walton Beach airport; otherwise both are about an hour from Pensacola.

Bottom line

Choose Destin for the most striking water, boating and a livelier resort scene, and Gulf Shores and Orange Beach for a relaxed, outdoorsy family week with more mid-range options. Both have the same white sand and warm water from May to October, so compare lodging for your exact dates, check each town’s beach rules, and plan around spring break and hurricane season.
